Hooray for Tide-Dye Tuesdays at Holden Beach! That's right – starting every Tuesday in mid-June through August 2, 2023 from 1:00 to 2:30 PM, our island residents and guests can tie-dye t-shirts right under our iconic bridge at the Holden Beach Pavilion. Known as "Tide-Dye Tuesdays" by our locals, you'll be given the dye and supplies for only $5.00. Please note, you need to be in line by 2:00 PM. Just bring a T-shirt and you're ready to go!
If you've never tie-dyed before, that's okay! Helpful volunteers are on hand to help you make your t-shirt the best tie-dye creation ever. It also doesn't hurt to do a little research on how to tie-dye, and we've saved you the time by providing some helpful tips below:
The t-shirt. Shirts that work best are 100% cotton, but you'll also be okay working with 50% cotton/50% polyester tees. Dyes bond well with natural fabrics; otherwise, the dye will wash out over time. You can find plain white cotton tees at your local craft store or right here at our at Dollar General on Holden Beach Road or Dollar Tree on Sabbath Home Road for a great price!
The colors. When you're ready to combine colors, stick with primary basics like red, blue, and yellow. When you combine secondary colors like green, purple, and orange, they typically result in a muddy brown color. So if you want green, purple, or orange in your tee, make sure you combine one of those secondary colors with prime colors.
The folds. Each tie-dyed shirt is unique because of the way you fold or bundle the shirt together before dying. Each fold you make creates a line in your pattern, so make narrow folds for smaller patterns and wider folds for larger patterns. Creasing and folding the fabric creates geometric-type shapes, while scrunching and twisting the tee makes more organic patterns and spirals.
The wash. When washing your tie-dye shirt for the first time, we suggest keeping it away from other white clothing to avoid stains. Wash your tee with other tie-dye shirts or dark clothing. After that, use your best judgement for future washes!
The creativity. Just because there are techniques you can follow for a certain tie-dye look doesn't mean you have to do it! The best part about tie-dying is that you're the artist of your masterpiece. Twist, fold, and get creative with your color choice to make something unique and fun that no one else will be wearing.
